Secondary IWB use: Beyond the Basics

Naomi Manning & Jessica Blunden

Session Outline
How can we get the students more involved in an inquiry based style of learning which promotes class interaction and discussion? In the past, ICT Integrators Naomi and Jessica have found it difficult to locate resources for use in a secondary context. In response to this they developed a series of IWB workshops to support teachers and worked with them to develop ideas for senior use. This year they worked with the History Department on an AGQTP project involving year 8 students using the SMARTboard to teach each other. This workshop will feature tips on some advanced features of Smart Notebook and demonstrate how these have been used successfully in a secondary classroom. Features covered will include:
  1. Using Ink Layer in studying websites
  2. Using the page animation feature for digital storytelling
  3. New Smart Resources: Tool Kit 2.0 and SMART Notebook Maths Tools
  4. Creating your own resources such as hide and reveal activities, using any image
  5. Using Smart Recorder to video lessons and exporting them to ipods, useful for revision
  6. Using the IWB to enhance use of other software programs and learning objects
  7. Putting the tools in your students’ hands: How to get your students using Notebook
  8. Where to find online resources with senior relevancy

Ideas are applicable across all brands of whiteboard and in a primary context, but examples will be SMART board specific and of a Secondary context. Workshop will suit integrators or teachers with a working knowledge of IWB software.

Naomi started out as an English/History teacher at Normanhurst Boys in 1998 and then went on to teach History and some IT at Wenona. She enjoyed the IT side of the work and went on to become an IT Tutor at Ku-ring-gai Community College, where she really enjoyed the empowerment IT gave to adults. Part of her role there has included working with teachers on SMARTboard integration into the curriculum. Naomi says of being an Integrator “It is a wonderful role to be involved in how IT is enhancing teaching and learning and I am loving working with teachers and other staff supporting them with IT”.
